Seven Pixels High

More commonly known as “Thousand Yard Stare”, the image of a US Marine brought metaphorically, if not quite physically, to his knees has become one of the most famous and most haunting of all war images.

Don MCullin, probably the world’s greatest ever photojournalist and war photographer took the photograph in Vietnam. Such was his ability to show the world what the self-censoring US media was often reluctant to show in South East Asia, McCullin was banned by Margaret Thatcher from covering the Falklands War in 1982, simply because of the damage it was felt McCullin’s images would do to the British national morale.
